In the case of burlesque, the power relationships as work between performer and spectator were much more complex than the terms “display” and “scopic desire” suggest. Desire always entails a partial relinquishing of power to that which is desired. The spectator might feel his position as a customer establishes him as the party for whose benefit the performance is staged, but it is the performer who controls what is offered.
